"PREEMIE" TOUQUES
I was first introduced to the idea of knitting 'touques' for preemies about 8 years ago, through an article in Canadian Living magazine. Unable to make contact with that group, I contacted a few local hospitals, recruited a couple of friends to help me knit, and began creating preemie touques.
As the demand grew it was necessary to put out feelers and recruit more knitters, so, in the spring of 2002, I contacted Volunteer Nanaimo. The word was put out and the response was overwhelming (THANK YOU, VANCOUVER ISLAND!) -- we are likely one of the largest groups of preemie knitters in Canada now! Currently we have at least knitters, and more coming on board every day.

MANDATE
The group knits or crochets teeny caps and donates them by the boxfuls to various hospitals. The caps go to premature babies to keep them warm and comfortable in their first struggle in a new environment. (Heat loss happens through the scalp, and even babies in incubators are better off with a cap on). New moms, worried about their tiny tykes, really appreciate this kindness and the 'homey' touch. The little ones get to take them home with them ... a nice souvenir.
